The Wills for All Project

Minelli Law Offices has notice a sharp decline in the quality of will preparation in recent years with the advent of online will preparation and "do it yourself" style web sites.  The purpose of these web sites is admirable - to allow anyone who wants a will to acquire one for little or no cost without dealing with the perceived "problems" of consulting an attorney.  However, there is a distinct problem: those wills don't work in Illinois.

Illinois is one of a small minority of states that does not recognize "holographic" (or self-made) wills.  This means that a legal will must be formally executed and witnessed.  Although some web sites will guide you through the process only by using an attorney can you be sure your will is drafted in a way to make your goals achievable and the will enforceable.

The "Wills for All" Project is Minelli Law Office's answer to these web sites.  We offer free consultations and free will drafting in order to make clients feel more comfortable about using an actual attorney instead of a budget web site.  This way, we hope to improve legal services available in Illinois.

A typical consultation will include an explanation of wills and trusts in Illinois to determine if a traditional will is what the client needs based on the client's personal goals.  Commonly the client's goals are met with alternate arrangements which are not readily apparent from internet research.  Information for the will is then collected and the relevant documents are drafted.

Although the program is currently open to anybody, Minelli Law Offices is actively seeking to provide free estate planning advice to the following groups:

• Newly married couples
• New or expectant parents
• Active duty military personnel and returning veterans
• Police and fire personnel
• Retirees
